I just want to clear up the misunderstanding regarding the statement about the purpose of the round robin tournament. You stated that the Bosses would have been automatically deemed Champions if they won the game against the Sirens. This is not the case.

Had the Bosses won or lost the last game, they were guaranteed a spot in the Championship game.

Had the Sirens lost the game, they would have been tied with the Brawlers and the Betties at 1-2. It was decided the tie breaker would be a round robin tournament between these three teams to determine who plays the Bosses in the Championship game and thus have a shot at the title.

As it turns out, the Sirens won and now have a tied record of 2-1 with the Bosses.

Thanks,
DeMentia

Thanks for all the purple love, Colonel. Just wanted to let y'all know that the Brawlers do have a major injury. Sista broke her ankle in practice a couple of weeks ago, and she will be out for a few months.

Hi Colonel!

Thanks for the support for Tequila. We're all rooting for her! I just wanted to let you know that she's still working hard to get back to where she was and that she's got a long way to go. I've been passing the following letter onto everyone I can. Maybe if enough people know her story, she'll be o.k. If you or your readers would be able to pass on the word. We would appreciate it. Thank you!!

Juanna Rumbel

"On August 25, 2007, a very passionate roller derby
skater named Tequila Mockingbird had a severe accident
during a game. Tequila, one of the original league
members of the Windy City Rollers is still
hospitalized over six weeks later and will remain so
for weeks to come. Tequila, whose real name is Tahirah
Johnson, has no movement in her legs or right arm. She
is able to move her left arm and has limited feeling
in that hand.

I met Tequila when I started the league over three
years ago. I never knew much about her at the time. I
knew she had the best attendance with the WCR's first
round of girls. I knew that if you walked down the
street, you were almost guaranteed to see her cruising
by on her bicycle. I knew that she outran me at boot
camps and that whenever I laced up my skates, she'd be
right beside me.

Lately, I've been sitting with Tequila watching her
learn to eat again, seeing her exhaustion after a
three-hour PT sessions and all the while, listening as
she makes jokes about how walking has always been so
overrated. But, that's the beauty of Tequila. She's
always pushed the boundaries, in herself and with
others. She always says what she wants to say without
a censor, and without apologies. She's simply an
amazing woman that I am lucky to know.

On October 27th at the Five Star Lounge, The Fury will
be there to help raise money for Tequila. This money
will go toward her medical bills, her loss of income,
and hopefully, leave something for when she's finally
able to return home. Obviously, we are seeking funds
foremost, but honestly, just by passing on this email
and promoting this event, you will be contributing
more than you know.

One of the basic philosophies that my partner and I
had when we started this league was that with
compassion, faith, and a sense of community anything
can happen. We believed that there was time and a
place for everything. And now, I ask that you
recognize that this is one of those times. Show your
compassion, remind her that she has people to support
her and let's give her the faith she needs to get
through the years ahead.

Thank you!

Juanna Rumbel, a.k.a. Elizabeth Gomez, #87 of The
Fury, and FRIEND to Tahirah Johnson

Ha ha! Yeah, I've got those pics somewhere. I had a computer crash, so they're sort of buried in the external hard drive, which doesn't get too friendly with the Mac unless the "stars line up" . I'll get it back up one of these days. Man, Pasadena was the goods! - Colonel

Some software will start playing it before it's done downloading, others will wait until it's done. Your mileage may vary.

We had issues with the initial provider of the blog site, and now manage it ourselves. The Colonel hasn't gotten off his rear to repost those photos.

Hey, Colonel! It was great to see you on the South Side Sunday. Glad you had a good time. That's what we aim for. Thanks so much for your input. We truly appreciate it. Love the podcasts. Awesome idea!

I'm gonna come to an HRD bout one of these days...when Mars is in line with Pluto or something like that. LOL I'll get there.

Until next time...keep rollin'!

Yes, if a jammer laps the opposing jammer she gets an extra point. Our refs know and count that point for us.

I might just have to go out and watch their next bout.

Ziv,
Point well taken. Agreed, as well, especially in reagrds to injuries and point spread. However, as an announcer I am always egging for drama (that of the non-injurious style), and aggressive play makes for more fodder at ringside. That's where my comments came into play. I see the purist side and actually agree with it. However, the other half of me pushes for rule bending and the chances being taken that come with it (outside of causing injury). You're also right about Belle Starr- she's always been a top notch player based on skill and spirit. I am a big fan and have been since 2005. Thanks fo the comment! - Colonel

Colonel -

I love what you do for Roller Derby - and for Houston. You're a class act. There is one thing that I have to agree with Phil on - and that's clean play.

Now, I understand and respect the fact that Roller Derby is a physical contact sport - and there is a penalty system - and all of that plays into the chess match of the bout. Cool. The Texecutioners learned a hard lesson about the use of penalties to win a game in Tucson - and it did not sit well.

All of that aside, let's try to agree on a few things.

1) Most penalties involve a risk of injury beyond what is expected (ie: tripping, hitting helmets, hitting at the knees, hitting from behind, blocking out of play - which is technically similar to a blind-side hit.)

2) EVERY team is occasionally called for these types of fouls - but if it seems they are intentional, you may have a riot on your hands (check Belle Starr's reaction in game two - she is not only an allstar for Austin, but a very CLEAN skater in general)

3) Most fouls occur when a skater is beaten by her opponent (like tripping, hitting from behind, hitting in the head, etc.)

4) When your team is up 60+ points, and there is no danger of winning by less than 40, perhaps the illegal part of the game is NOT proper - no - in my opinion, continuing to foul when you're up by that much shows a lack of class - something I don't want associated with one of my favorite leagues - and I've seen a few.

Houston - you're fast, you're tough, you won the game hands down. No question. Fouls are always controversial - and I NEVER like to see illegal play - so please, put yourself in your fans' shoes (and Phil Arnold and I are most definitely Houston fans - from a league, to teams, to skaters and staff) - keep our respect and respect your beaten opponents as you were respected in Austin. Let's move on - agreed?

Much derby love to you all!

Ziv

The prizes in the raffle are great, but we are also having a silent auction with some AWESOME stuff. Starr Doom scored some goodies! We can't wait to party with everyone, and you know the Brawlers can PARTY!!!
